Drought Landscaping

A landscaped garden with various small shrubs and stone ground cover.

Drought Tolerant Landscaping

If you are looking for drought tolerant landscaping or drought resistant ideas, we have years of experience working with property owners to conserve water without compromising curb appeal or aesthetics.

Drought tolerant landscaping isn’t just a trend to address the drought in California; it’s a landscape design practice that has been established for decades. Contrary to popular belief, drought tolerant landscaping does not have to consist solely of cacti and rocks. There are numerous native plants and California friendly options that are colorful and beautiful throughout the year.

Low-maintenance drought tolerant landscaping can be vibrant and lush rather than just a sea of brown or grey. Adequate watering for the initial couple of months after planting is crucial for success.

Incorporating native plants and California friendly species not only enhances the visual appeal but also promotes water-wise practices and restores biodiversity by providing habitats that attract beneficial insects, birds, and butterflies. Many of our drought tolerant landscape design ideas feature drought friendly or drought tolerant trees, plants, and landscaping elements that are truly stunning. Mediterranean gardens are especially well-suited for drought tolerant landscaping, as they thrive in conditions of wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Xeriscaping with Low Water Native Plants

Drought tolerant landscaping, often referred to as xeriscaping or desert landscaping, emphasizes the use of native plants that require minimal water. This approach to water-friendly landscaping is becoming increasingly important as homeowners across California and the western United States face challenges in maintaining their properties during the ongoing drought.

Bioswales

Bioswales are essential landscape elements designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water. They consist of a swale drainage course with gently sloped sides (less than six percent) and are often enhanced with drought tolerant landscaping featuring native plants, compost, and/or riprap, making them an effective component of xeriscaping.
